Meditation: the Art of Mindfulness and Relaxation

We have all been told to relax at some point our lives. But did anyone ever explain how to relax? We all seek to reduce stress in our lives, and we all need to take time and help the body, mind, and spirit.

Meditation is a practice that brings the mind into clearer focus. It can help us reduce stress, anxiety, and blood pressure, by gaining mental and emotional focus. Meditation often conjures up the image of some difficult-to-master technique, while sitting cross-legged. However it can be as simple as listening to your breathing, bringing your mind back into focus so you can face the rest of your day.

In this class, we will learn some basic principles of meditation. We will learn to listen to our breath, and use that as a “support” for our meditation. The Meditation class will explore:

  • Seated Meditation: Using fundamentals of Zazen, a Japanese seated meditation, you will sit comfortably and learn the basics of mindful meditation.
  • Standing Meditation: Using the basics of Tai Chi Chuan, a Chinese martial art, you will learn how to hold a proper standing posture and incorporate breathing in your meditation.
  • Mind-Body Meditation: Using the principles of Qigong, a Chinese healing art, you will learn how to combine movement and breathing to center the mind and body.

Balance Boot Camp

Balance Boot Camp is an innovative program designed to help improve balance through body awareness. Balance impairment is one of the most important risk factors for injuries. Studies have shown that balance issues and fear of falling can greatly affect quality of life. By learning simple concepts, you can regain your confidence and improve your balance.

The Balance Boot Camp uses the art of Tai Chi Chuan to teach you the fundamentals of balance: posture, movement, relaxation, and breathing. Through the Balance Boot Camp, you will learn how to take these keys and integrate them into your daily routine.

The Balance Boot Camp program consists of 3 major components:

  • Posture: You will learn one of the easiest and most fundamental aspects of Tai Chi and how to apply it to your everyday living.
  • Movement: One of the best aspects of Tai Chi is that you learn to move slowly. This enables us to understand and listen to our body to provide better balance.
  • Relaxation: Tai Chi is often called "Moving Meditation". By learning the basics of meditation, you will have a more focused mind and enhance your body awareness. This also gives you confidence and reduces the fear of falling.

The Balance Boot Camp program is offered in three varieties:

  • Boot Camp for Seniors: For seniors looking for a gentle approach to improving balance.
  • Boot Camp for Individuals: For those individuals with balance problems.
  • Boot Camp for Professional: For professionals, such as fitness instructors and caregivers, that are interested in teaching these balance exercises to others.
